Bicheno Penguins Tour

Bicheno Penguin Tours operate nightly tours at dusk, the perfect time to witness the little penguins coming ashore.

The remarkable wildlife experience begins with a short bus ride to a private penguin rookery. Established over 30 years ago by rehabilitating farmland into penguin-friendly habitat, the rookery is a special place where you can observe the unique behaviours of little penguins in their natural environment.

Your guide will accompany you on a walk through the rookery, sharing interesting facts about penguins and their habitat while also discussing the steps we can take to protect and improve the lives of these wonderful birds. The tour involves walking approximately 500 meters over 50 minutes, allowing plenty of time to observe the penguins.

Winter Season – February to August: Depending on when dusk falls, the tours depart between 5:00pm to 7:30pm
During the cooler months, penguins are focused on maintaining their burrows, building nests and spending less time in the ocean. This season is generally quieter for penguins and visitors, providing a more personal experience in the penguin rookery.

Breeding Season – September to January: Tours depart from 7:30pm to 9:00pm, depending on when it gets dark
In the warmer months, the penguins are very busy preparing for their offspring. The male penguins are especially busy, as they take on the important task of building burrows to protect their growing families. They work tirelessly to create a safe and cozy home that meets the expectations of their mates and their offspring.

Breeding Season – from $76 per adult, $32 per child (4-14 years, children under 4 are free)
